Interstate Child Custody Matters

California Move-Away and Relocation Attorney

After a divorce, one parent cannot move far away without affecting the established custody and visitation schedule. There are legal procedures for dealing with removal of children to another state.

The Law Offices of Susan E. Christiansen can guide you through the many issues involved in interstate child custody matters. Our family law attorneys have many years of experience dealing with the laws in California and other states. We serve both residents of Contra Costa and Solano Counties and people elsewhere with legal issues in the area.

The Law and Interstate Child Custody

It is very common for one parent to want to move to another state and take the children. Parents have the rights to move wherever they wish, but they cannot necessarily take their children with them. The further away the children go, the less parenting time is possible for the parent staying put.

Often, a parent moving away with the children must make allowances for the other parent's long distance visitation. This could mean either paying for the travel expenses for the other parent to visit the children or the expenses of having the children visit the other parent. If the children are flown to see the other parent, and the children are very young, a chaperone must be provided.

Changes to Child and Spousal Support

Long-distance relocation often affects child support. If the amount of parenting time goes down for the parent providing support, the amount of child support will go up. Spousal support can also change.

Of course, the amount of change to support depends on what you and your lawyer are able to negotiate. At The Law Offices of Susan E. Christiansen, our lawyers can get to know your particular needs and then help negotiate the best possible interstate child custody arrangement for you.
